A genre film with a great title, a great star, and everything we need to be excited about it
Among the cluster of projects that have emerged around Josh Hartnett's resurgence, The Last Draw of Jack of Hearts is perhaps the one with the most intriguing air of mystery around it. Details have been sparse, but the project is confirmed as part of Hartnett's incoming slate and appears to be a genre piece with Western or crime thriller elements — the kind of film that a title like that promises. And at this stage in his career, with Hartnett's judgment in project selection proving consistently sharp, that is enough to have us genuinely excited.
The Last Draw of Jack of Hearts is one of those titles that tells you almost everything you need to know about the tone and genre of a film. It suggests a Western, or at least a Western-inflected crime story. It suggests stakes, finality, and a protagonist with something to prove. All of that maps perfectly onto where Hartnett is right now as a performer — someone who can hold the frame of a genre piece with total authority.
What the last few years of Hartnett's work have confirmed is that he is extraordinarily well-suited to intelligent genre filmmaking. Trap, Penny Dreadful, Fight or Flight, Verity — these are all genre films, and all of them are better for having him in them. The Last Draw of Jack of Hearts appears to continue in that tradition.
More details are expected to emerge as the project moves through pre-production and into filming. What is already clear is that this is the kind of film that deserves a dedicated fanbase from day one. We will be watching closely and reporting back as soon as we have more.
