Most horror for today’s casual moviegoer/TV enthusiast plays on unseen or conceptual fears: surveillance footage, viral outbreaks, and large scale serial killers who love their torture porn. These are terrors of theprivileged mind, of the comfortable city mouse who keeps their space clean. These fears play on the subconscious knowledge that we are taking up too much evolutionary room. Self-destructive homo sapiens get all the airtime, and you can thank the monsters featured in Penny Dreadful for being the gritty prototypes of this masochistic fascination. Let’s take a tally of how well Showtime is covering its horror/history bases, and then I’ll let you know just why I brought this episode’s score down a few pegs.................
