SINGULARITY: JOSH HARTNETT TO STAR IN ROLAND JOFFE'S EPIC ROMANCE

While promoting his new release BUNRAKU, Josh Hartnett told Tribute.ca in a video interview that he will be heading soon to India to shoot acclaimed French director Roland Joffe next project SINGULARITY. Hartnett will star as British captain James Stewart. Paul Breuls’ Belgian production, sales and financing entity Corsan is producing.

SINGULARITY is an 33 millions epic story set across two time periods and continents. Plot involves a British officer in colonial India; the Indian woman he falls in love with; an American marine biologist; and his lover, a researcher who is trapped in a wrecked British merchant ship.

Synopsis: Great barrier Reef, 2010. After a dangerous dive to save his wife while exploring an 18th century merchant ship wreckage, Jay Fennel, a rugged and attractive marine archeologist lies brain dead in a Boston hospital. Jay’s dream-like coma takes us back in time to Pune, India in 1778. The Brits are invading the palaces and a young British captain named James Stewart (who bears a striking resemblance to Jay) is a about to embark on a dangerous mission. Along the way he encounters murder, deceit, betrayal and revenge. He falls deeply in love with an Indian She-warrior named Tulaja- an impossible love which he must fight for. Only the power of a ring can transcend time and save a life.

Corsan World Sales is handling international sales. Anchor Bay holds the distribution rights for the US, UK and Australia.

"En parallèle, Corsan a débuté la production de "Singularity" en Australie et en Inde. C'est la dernière oeuvre de Roland Joffe, récompensé par la Palme d'Or et nominé aux Oscars ("The Mission", "The Killing Fields"), avec pour acteur vedette Josh Hartnett ("Black Hawk Down", "Pearl Harbor")."

Ajay Jhankar, chairman of Neelmudra Entertainment, has announced the change of his coming movie 'The Invaders'. He has clarified that the title of 'The Invaders' has been changed to 'Singularity'. However, the story of this movie remains the same. "After the screenplay was ready we decided to change the title as we discovered there were three Hollywood films that had something similar to the word 'Invaders'. He explained that 'Singularity' means surprise or some kind of magic. Directed by Roland Joffe, the original story covered the first Anglo-Maratha war in the 18th century.

The script, however, has been altered too with significant changes. Aishwarya Rai's manager Simone Sheffield confirmed this. This is to recall that Rai is one of the finalised actors for this project. The shooting of 'Singularity' will begin in India along with Rai from September. 'The Mummy' star Brendan Fraser will no longer feature in the revamped script, it is learnt. There is a guess in industry circles about the continuance of the other hero, Vivek Oberoi. It is wondered if he will act in 'Singularity'. Incidentally, cinematographer and associate producer of 'Singularity', Debu Deodhar, neither confirms this nor denies it. This has led to more rumors.

I am suprised that Joffé casted Josh and Chris Pine because none of them are considered as reliable character actors. Moreover, Aishwarya Rai is such a huge star of international dimension and she is a great actress.

33 million dollars is a great budget. The budget for "Dancehall" is 5 millions. "August" had a budget of 3 millions. "I Come with the Rain" had a budget of 18 millions. "Bunraku" had a budget of 25 millions. The average budget for an European independent film is 6 millions. Furthermore, unlike Josh's latest indie films, SINGULARITY has already a distributor for the US, UK and Australia.

Roland Joffe is an amazing director. He won the Palm d'Or at Cannes Film Festial and was nominated for 2 Academy Awards. Surely you know the gem film "The Mission" starring Robert de Niro and Jeremy Irons and the fim's score by Ennio Morricone. To be honest, I cannot believe that he casted Josh and Chris Pine...
