The Children's Monologues dramatise the testimonies of young children growing up in Rammulotsi, a small rural township in the Free State province of South Africa. Invited to describe a day that they will never forget, the Monologues retell the stories of young people expressing personal experiences in their own words, in their native Sesotho language.
Five years ago this November the original Children’s Monologueswas performed just once, simultaneously in London and in Rammulotsi township, South Africa. The project brought together cast and directors for one day only, giving them 24 hours to prepare for a sold out performance at The Old Vic Theatre. With the proceeds the Piet Patsa Community Arts Centre was built, and proved such a success that we now need room to expand.
On October 25 2015 at the Royal Court Theatre, directorDanny Boyle will bring together an entirely new all-star cast and a brand new script for a once in a lifetime event celebrating the five year anniversary of The Children's Monologues. Based on the testimony of over 200 South African children, some of the best playwrights in South Africa and the UK will contribute monologues to be performed only once. In South Africa the Monologues will be performed by the children themselves on the same night.
