BUNRAKU: JOBLO REVIEW

Remember the name Guy Moshe, as I have a feeling we're going to be hearing a lot from him once people get a load of BUNRAKU. The press notes for this film compare it to 300, and SIN CITY, but don't worry, BUNRAKU is not the second coming of THE SPIRIT, which was another film that was sold in that way. BUNRAKU is very much graphic novel come to life, but the style could not be more different than those films.

Rather than comics, BUNRAKU…

BUNRAKU: THE FILM STAGE REVIEW

In writer/director Guy Moshe‘s BUNRAKU, a silent stranger rides into a lawless town on a rickety train. Let’s call this cowboy The Drifter (Josh Hartnett). He heads straight for the bar, looking for The Woodcutter (Ron Perlman), the most powerful man east of the Atlantic.… Continue

BUNRAKU: VARIETY REVIEW

Taking a 180-degree turn from his grittily realistic feature debut; "Holly," Israeli-born writer-director Guy Moshe serves up "BUNRAKU", an action-fantasy that flaunts its conceptual and stylistic artifice in a pulp pastiche best enjoyed by those for whom movies can't be too much like comicbooks (not… Continue

BUNRAKU: JOSH HARTNETT & DIRECTOR GUY MOSHE INTERVIEW

Some films defy easy description--so rather than even try, I'm going to let Josh Hartnett do it for me. He seems to have it down, and looks better in glasses than me, too. What I can tell you about "BUNRAKU," which premiered Saturday night at the Toronto Film Festival in… Continue

BUNRAKU: TORONTO FILM SCENE REVIEW

BUNRAKU feels like a movie that a lot of filmmakers have been trying to make for a very, very long time. What makes the film work, where others have failed, is that it takes a very simple premise – seeking revenge on the guy at the top – and filters that through very complex, diverse and beautiful art forms on top of intricate and exciting fight sequences.…

Bunraku!!.... and my late night/ early morning run in with him!!!

Ok so i have only gone to one film so far and it has been Bunraku...I enjoyed the visuals, and of course Josh, but not so much the movie as a whole. Josh to me, is always an awesome actor. I feel he brings a charisma and energy to anything hes in much like Johnny Depp...except Cuter ;) lol....ok, so i saw him come out of the limo at the premiere for Bunraku, and my bf was the first person to greet him and got it on iphone video...I will post that later.,i shook hands with him and he said hi…

BUNRAKU: COLLIDER VIDEO BLOG REVIEW

In the last 24 hours, many people here at the Toronto International Film Festival got to check out writer/director Guy Moshe’s Bunraku. Starring Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Kevin McKidd and Ron Perlman, this was one of those films on my radar since we ran the images that showcased the hyper stylized sets and costumes.

Going in, I figured the film was either going to be incredibly cool, or a train wreck of epic proportions.… Continue

BUNRAKU: THE FILM BUFF BLOG REVIEW

The words "stunning", "spellbinding", and "revelation" are all terms that anyone who is critiquing a film should shun away from. However, in the case of Guy Moshe's BUNRAKU there are no more fitting words to describe this gem of a film.

The term "bunraku" comes from a 400 year old form of Japanese puppet theatre, and Moeshe uses this classic art form… Continue

BUNRAKU: SCREEN DAILY REVIEW

Not half as cool as it thinks it is, Bunraku flaunts style and attitude, but without any characters to latch onto the film quickly becomes an empty exercise in hyper-adrenalized genre filmmaking. Though buttressed by a name cast that includes Josh Hartnett and Woody Harrelson, writer-director Guy Moshe has concocted a self-consciously artificial “movie movie” in which every shot, idea, or line of dialogue feels… Continue
